A League Division 1 - Friday 14th May

Wolfe Tones 1-6 Donaghmore/Ashbourne 2-13

H/T Wolfe Tones 1-3 Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-3

From the throw in Wolfe Tones won the ball and put the pressure on from the start but put the first attempt wide.  On two minutes they put up their first score and went on to score a second point on 6 minutes before Don/Ash registered their first point on 7 minutes coming from Andrew Tormey. Wolfe Tones replied going 3 to 1 up after 8 minutes before Eoin Reilly got the next point on 9 minutes but it was their last score until the 28th minute.  Don/Ash were guilty of 4 wides in that period and 2 balls straight to the goalkeepers hands while Wolfe Tones went 1-3 to 2points ahead.  This was all to change when the ball was well won in the backs and Ciaran Ellis went on a run and passed the ball over the front of the goals which was caught by Andrew Tormey and put in the back of the net to bring it back to a one point game.  Niall Farrell finished the half with a fine point from play to bring the teams level at half time.

Don/Ash started the 2nd half  well and put up 2 scores from play before Tones replied, the first coming from Niall Farrell and second from Tormey on 33 and 35 minutes.  Don/Ash were starting to win ball at centre field with Rory O'Connor and Eoin Reilly doing well. Tones replied on the 36th minute before Ian Dowd pointed from centre forward where he played very well.  Don/Ash dominated proceedings which frustrated Tones and when their midfielder Martin McNally got a 2nd yellow on 48 minutes the writing was on the wall that Don/Ash were going to leave Kilberry with 2 more points in the bag.  Eoin Riordan put over 2 frees, one from an acute angle on the 40th and 41st minute leaving Don/Ash with a 3pt lead before Tones replied on the 43rd minute with a fine point from Stephen Corrigan from about 40yds out but that would be their last score until 2 minutes before the end of the match. Don/Ash were moving well and unfortunately had a goal disallowed when David Morgan was deemed to be in the square when he punched the ball to the net.  Morgan did get his goal with three quarters of the match gone followed by the same man scoring a point a minute later.  Andrew Tormey and Eoin Reilly got a further 3 over the bar before Gordan Beggy for Tones got their final point of the game on 58 minutes. Niall Farrell finished the scoring with a point just before the final whistle.

This was a game of two halves where Don/Ash backs had to work really hard in the first half to keep Tones from scoring with the breeze on their backs.  Sean Harmon performed very well at corner back and Ciaran Ellis was always there to pick up loose ball and run the line.  Tadg Kelly was at centre back and did really well with the absence of Colm O'Mealoid due to injury. As a unit the backs were solid and held Tones to 1-3 from play.  The 2nd half was dominated by Don/Ash winning ball in centre field and Kevin Lanigan won alot of breaking ball which was quickly passed into the danger area.  Eoin Riordan went off injured on 57 minutes and was replaced by Iarlaith O'Donnell.  This was a good team performance with 4 wins from 4 in the league.  Next up is Trim at home next Thursday night.
