Donaghmore Ashbourne’s fourth team travelled to Athboy for their opening round 5B league game but despite a good performance had to make the journey home without any league points. Vinny Carton opened the scoring for the visitors with a 20 meter free on 5 minutes.
The home side drew level at the end of the first quarter and with two quick points on 18 and 19 minutes they took the lead. Gary Lawlor reduced the deficit on 21 minutes with a snap shot as he was first to react to a ball coming off the post. The sides were level on 24 minutes when Vinny Carton finished off a good team move.
Three quick points from the home side gave them a three point lead heading to the interval. Donaghmore Ashbourne reduced the lead to 2 points when Evan Rogers registered his first score of his adult career when he pointed from 20 meters after another well worked team score. Rogers could have given the visitors a half time lead in injury time when it goal attempt hit the post.
Donaghmore Ashbourne started the second period as they finished the opening period with Rogers pointing from 25 meters. The sides traded points with Carton scoring for Donaghmore Ashbourne.
Two quick goals and a couple of points by the home side at the start of the third quarter was the turning point in the game and gave Clann na nGael a comfortable lead going into the final stages of the game.
To their credit Donaghmore Ashbourne finished strong with Brian Fitzgerald scoring a goal and a point although the home side did register the final point.
Overall the visiting side who fielded a number of adult football debutants and players making their return to the club can be happy with their performance if not the final result.
