Venue: Syddan
Full Time: Syddan 1-10 Donaghmore Ashbourne 2-08 Half Time: Syddan 0-07 Donaghmore Ashbourne 2-03
Donaghmore Ashbourne’s third finished out their third away game in a row with an impressive and hard earned win away to Syddan on a wet May evening. Although the game commenced in dry conditions the May rain entered within minutes of the throw in and prevailed throughout the remainder of the game giving slippy underfoot conditions for both team. That said both teams must be commended for the entertainment and flowing football played in a good spirit. As with many league encounters the home side started the brightest and opened their account with two unanswered points in the opening minutes. Gerry Kelly did reply for the visitors on 6 minutes before Syddan hit another two unanswered points late in the first quarter. Both sides traded points early in the third quarter with Brian Fitzgerald pointing for Donaghmore Ashbourne. Midway through the second quarter Stephen Condon collected a ball at the edge of the square to round the defender and the keeper to fire in to the net to draw the sides level. A minute later Donaghmore Ashbourne gained the lead for the first time when Ross Tormey collected a ball 30 meters out and when the home side defence opened up to give him a clear route to goal he duly obliged and fired high into the net. Syddan did reduce the deficit on 27 minutes with point before Cathal Field replied with a point on 29 minutes however it was the home side that had the final say of the half with a point in injury time.
Donaghmore Ashbourne extended their lead early in the second half with points from Fitzgerald and Ross Tormey. Syddan kept themselves in the game with a quick reply on 33 minutes from a pointed free. Substitute Andy Kinsella gave the visitors a bit of breathing space when he pointed on 39 minutes. Syddan were awarded a penalty on 48 minutes and although Sean Kent got a hand to the ball he could not prevent the goal and the sides were level heading into the closing stages of the game. Syddan regained the lead with a free on 50 minutes but Leon Tormey replied on 53 minutes to swing the ties back in Donaghmore Ashbourne’s favour. When Syddan another free on 55 minutes it looked as if this game was going to end up with honours shared but the experience of the Donaghmore Ashbourne side came to the fore. Leon Tormey who was superb form in midfield caught a great high ball and found Lynch on the right corner where he turned his man and split the posts with a strike from an acute angle with a minute on the clock. Unfortunately for the home side Tormey collected the resulting kick out and the visitors were in possession when the final whistle blew. Overall it was a good team performance from Donaghmore Ashbourne with the younger lads of Deery, Carey and Callaghan working well with the experience of Lynch, Condon and Tormey.
