Despite the disappointment of the championship defeats last weekend Donaghmore Ashbourne’s second team continued their good run in the Division 1B league with a comfortable victory over a depleted Skryne team.
The home side dominated the game from the thrown in although they only led at the end of the first quarter by 4 points to 1. Cathal Field opened the scoring with a point on 2 minutes. Leon Tormey extended the lead on 8 minutes with a long range point. Skryne did reply with a point on 11 minutes before Sean Harmon extended the lead for Donaghmore Ashbourne with two unanswered points on 12 and 13 minutes.
A goal from Paddy Warren on 19 minutes seemed to kick start a Donaghmore Ashbourne scoring spree for the second quarter. Points from Stephen Kavanagh on 20 minutes together with a brace from Paul Gillian minutes later were registered before Kavanagh scored Donaghmore Ashbourne’s second goal on 24 minutes. Both sides traded points in the closing minutes with Warren pointing from close range with a first time strike to put the ball over the bar.
It was Skryne who opened the scoring in the second period with a point straight from the throw in but this was their only score of the half. During the reminder of the half the home side dominated possession and managed to extend their lead with seven unanswered points. Field pointed on 35 minutes with Ian Dowd getting his name on the score sheet on 36 minutes and Eric Callaghan scoring on 43 minutes.
Donaghmore Ashbourne has two goal chances at the start of the final quarter but both Paul Gilligan and substitute Mattie Devine’s attempts went wide.
Callaghan got his second point of the game on 48 minutes when he pointed after a good solo run. Substitute David Carey pointed on 49 minutes with Devine registering a brace of scores on 51 and 52 minutes. John Paul Lynch also had a goal chance but his goal bound shot came off the post.
The final score of the game on 57 minutes when Cathal Field fired low into the bottom of the net to cap off a comfortable win for the home side.
The win ensures that Donaghmore Ashbourne qualify for the league final.
