'B' League Div 3 vs Dunshaughlin

15th March 2011

B League Division 3 team off to a flyer.

Our “B” League, Division 3 team made it a hat-trick of victories in the opening round at home against Dunshaughlin on Tuesday night. The final score line of 0-14 to 0-5 was a fairly accurate reflection of Donaghmore/Ashbourne’s dominance throughout. We had our first point of the night almost straight from the throw-in as Ciarán Byrne won the ball in the centre and sent an inch-perfect pass to Mikey Gleeson for him to notch his first score. A minute later Stephen Condon rose high to produce a superb catch out on the wing. He cut across the pitch and through the Dunshaughlin defence to score an outstanding solo point. Quick thinking from Aonghus Mulvihill as he drove a sideline to Evan Rogers led to our third score and an Eoin Carroll free that found Mikey in space produced another point. Evan Rogers pointed a free after nine minutes to increase the margin to five points. Indeed the margin should have been a lot greater had it not been for two shockingly squandered goal opportunities. The names of the guilty will be withheld to spare their blushes. Dunshaughlin rallied briefly as they recorded the next couple of points to reduce the gap to just three points. Eoin Carroll then marked his return to competitive action with a superb point from distance, before some excellent interplay between Colin O’Sullivan and Mikey got Stephen in to restore Donaghmore/Ashbourne’s four point advantage. This remained the gap at the break as Dunshaughlin failed to convert a thirteen meter free and Evan Rogers saw his thirty-five meter free hit the upright.

Evan compensated for that miss after the restart with yet another fine point. Slight knocks to Robert O’Connor and Stephen Condon saw the introduction of minor stars Gareth Deery and Daithi Murtagh. Dunshaughlin kept the game alive for a brief while as they scored a point to trail by just four. This was as close as they would get however, as Daithi marked his arrival as an adult footballer with a point on twenty minutes. Directly from the kick out, Evan gathered the ball and despatched it between the uprights. Colin O’Sullivan and Cathal O’Regan scored their first points of the night before Daithi got his second to extend the home side’s advantage to nine points. Brian Fitzgerald, on for Mikey, produced a classy pick-up on the run to lead to our final point of the night before Dunshaughlin finished off with a late consolation point.

This was a very solid performance all round and this team, with its blend of youth and experience, could go a long way to producing some silverware this year.
