Half Time: Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-05 Duleek/Bellewstown 1-02

Donaghmore Ashbourne, fielding a different team from the opening two rounds continued their winning ways with a third successive league victory after  a low scoring win over Duleek/Bellewstown. The visitors opened the match the brighter of the two sides but hit three consecutive wides in the opening three minutes. The paid the price as the home side opened the scoring on 4 minutes when Faolan Smith pointed from 20 meters. Smith doubled the lead on 6 minutes when he pointed a free from 25 minutes. Donaghmore Ashbourne extended their lead further on 8 minutes after a good team move resulted in a goal for the home side. The ball was moved quickly from the full back line to the forwards and Iarlaith O’Donnell collecting a Kevin Lanigan pass about 25 meters out advanced towards goals. In a one on one situation he fired high into the net. Rory Maguire extended their lead with a good point from play a minute later. Two further points from a Smith free on 12 minutes and Colm O’Mealoid on 15 minutes gave the home side a comfortable 8 point lead at the end of the first quarter.

The home side should have extended their lead in the second quarter but as they lost their shape so too went their scoring opportunities. They paid the price late in the half when Duleek/Bellewstown opened their own account with a point on 26 minutes. The visitors added a second point in first half injury time and completed their recovery 4 minutes into injury time when they found the net after a number of defensive lapses.

The second half was an even lower scoring affair with both sides cancelling each other out. Donaghmore Ashbourne did extended their lead when Niall Farrell pointed from a free on 35 minutes. Another Smith point on 36 minutes extended the home side’s lead to 5 points.

Although the game was mainly played in a good sporting manner tempers did spill over mid way through the second half but once calm was restored both sides returned to play football for the remained of the game. Both sides had a number of chances but it was visitors who had the final say with a pointed free on 56 minutes. The home side managed to hold on for a narrow 4 point win to make it three wins out of three in the league.
