Donaghmore Ashbourne’s 2nd team continued their good run of form in the group stages to see off a Summerhill challenge and book a place in the playoff stages of the competition. The first half of the game was a close affair with Ross Hanway opening the scoring with a point in the first minute. Donaghmore Ashbourne had a number of chances to extend the lead but hit 4 wides before Summerhill drew the sides level on 9 minutes. The hill took the lead on 13 minutes with Paul Gilligan pointing on 15 minutes to draw the sides level for the second time. The sides traded points again early in the second quarter with Summerhill pointing on 17 minutes and Mattie Devine replying on 20 minutes with a free. Donaghmore Ashbourne had a chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty on 25 minutes but Ross Hanway’s attempt was saved by the Summerhill keeper. Donaghmore Ashbourne missed a number of wides late in the half before frees from Gilligan and Eric Callaghan in injury time gave them a two point lead at the interval. Summerhill reduced the deficit with a point on 32 minutes before the turning point in the game came. Cathal Field finished off a good team effort when he found the back of the net on 33 minutes and Field was involved a minute later when he set up Eric Callaghan who also found the net with a great strike. Three further unanswered points from Gilligan, Devine and Hanway late in the third quarter gave Donaghmore Ashbourne a comfortable lead going into the final quarter. The final quarter saw the sides trade scores twice with Hanway and Devine registering points for Donaghmore Ashbourne while the Summerhill score came from frees. Summerhill did have the final say with two points in injury time but overall Donaghmore Ashbourne were deserving winners. It was a good overall team performance with notable contributions from Joey Long and Martin Lynch particularly in the second half.
