Travelling to Summerhill on Sunday evening our senior team knew that a win would move them one step closer to the Division 1 final. Although Donaghmore Ashbourne started the brightest and led at the interval a poor second half performance gave the home side confidence as the game went on and Summerhill took the points with a late goal. Bryan Menton opened the scoring for Donaghmore Ashbourne with a point in the opening 30 seconds. The visitors applied the early pressure and were rewarded in the second minute when Ian Dowd fired into an empty net to put 4 points between the teams. Summerhill did reply with a point on 3 minutes. Both sides traded points towards the later end of the first quarter with Eoin Riordan and Andrew Tormey pointing from frees on 9 and 14 minutes while the homes sides scores came on 13 and 15 minutes respectfully. Things look bright for Donaghmore Ashbourne on 18 minutes when Niall Farrell collected a long range Eoin Riordan free and beat the defect to fire to the back of the net and put 6 points between the teams. Menton extended the visitors lead with a point after a good solo run. Summerhill did reply with a free on 23 minutes before Menton got his third of the evening with another solo run and point on 24 minutes. The home side had the final say of the first half with two unanswered points before the interval. Both sides traded points early in the second half with Summerhill points on 34 minutes with a free and the Donaghmore Ashbourne score coming from an Eoin Reilly point from 35 meters. Andrew Tormey put 6 points between the sides on 42 minutes but this was Donaghmore Ashbourne‘s last score of the evening. In the final quarter the home side never gave up and when they scored a goal on 48 minutes their tails were up. Donaghmore Ashbourne appeared to panic, lost their shape and contested many decision by the referee. Summerhill reduced the deficit to 2 points with a point on 51 minutes. The crucial score came on 56 minutes when Summerhill got through the Donaghmore Ashbourne defence to raise the green flag for the second time and take the lead for the first time in the game. This was Donaghmore Ashbourne’s third consecutive defeat after what was a very success start to the league so victories in the remaining games is essential to qualify for the final.
