Donaghmore Ashbourne’s 2nd team got their Junior A championship campaign back on track with a good win over Bective on Friday Night. The first quarter of the game was a very low scoring affair with the sides level at a single point a piece where Keith Scally opened the scoring for Donaghmore Ashbourne on 9 minutes and Bective replying with a free on 12 minutes. In truth Donaghmore Ashbourne should have been well ahead during this period but they managed to register 7 wides and saw a Mattie Devine goal chance saved by the Bective keeper. Bective did take the lead on 16 minutes with a point from a quick free but Mattie Devine drew teh sides level a minute later with a 14 meter free. This score seemed to kick Donaghmore Ashbourne into gear and they managed to convert their dominance with scores in the second quarter. Three unanswered points from Tony Morgan (19 minutes), Devine (20 Minutes) and Keith Scally opened up lead for Donaghmore Ashbourne. Bective did reply with a free on 24 minutes to reduce the deficit but this was their final score of the half. Further points from Ian Dowd, Scally and Devine in the closing stages of the half gave Donaghmore Ashbourne a 0-08 to 0-03 interval lead. Donaghmore Ashbourne started the second period as they finished their opening period with a number of unanswered scores. Devine registered two points from frees on 32 and 34 minutes before Morgan hit is second point of the evening on 37 minutes. Devine extended the Donaghmore Ashbourne lead to 9 points on 39 minutes before Bective opened their second half account with a reply on 40 minutes. Both sides traded points late in the third quarter with Devine pointing from play for Donaghmore Ashbourne. Bective were given a lifeline on 49 minutes when they broke through the Donaghmore Ashbourne defence to fire to the net. They also managed to score a point from the resulting kick out to leave only 5 points between the teams. However Donaghmore Ashbourne did not panic and they replied with points from Devine and a brace from Eric Callaghan. Bective to their credit did not give up and scored their second goal of the evening on 58 minutes but Devine capped a fine performance with a point in the final minute. Despite the slow start it was a good overall team performance from Donaghmore Ashbourne and this puts them back into contention for a playoff play in the competition.
