"B" League Division 1 Vs Simonstown Gaels

4th March 2011 @ Don/ Ash

Our second team were in B League, Division 1 action on Saturday as we hosted Simonstown. It was disappointing to see a club as big as Simonstown arrive with only fourteen players and it was hard to derive too much satisfaction from the eventual 2-14 to 0-6 victory. Playing against the breeze, Donaghmore/Ashbourne started much the brighter, and in fact Simonstown’s first score took seventeen minutes to arrive. During this time Donaghmore/Ashbourne eased into a 1-3 to 0-1 lead. Eric Callaghan scored our goal when a Mattie Devine forty-five dropped short for Eric to fist the ball home. Points from Stephen Kavanagh either side of a Mattie Devine free left us five points to the good. Simonstown did rally briefly at this stage and scored two points in two minutes, one from play and one free kick. A ball forward from Darryl Lawlor was well called and well taken by John Broderick who sent a sweet pass to Eoighan Riordan who converted the chance very well. A further point from Cathal Field and a converted free from Mattie left us 1-6 to 0-3 in front at half time.

Cathal was on the score-sheet again shortly after the resumption and a cracking left-footed drive to the net from Paul Gilligan after seven minutes effectively ended the contest. Mattie stretched our lead to double figures which signalled the time for several substitutions to be made. Seán Kent replaced Andy Colgan in goal, and Robert O’Connor and Daithi Murtagh came on for Darryl Lawlor and Paul Gilligan. Mattie scored two more points, one a superb effort from play before the next substitutions were made. Gavin Kennedy and David Carey made welcome returns from their rugby exploits in place of Martin Lynch and Ross Hanway. A further brace of points from Eric-one with his right and one with his left foot and another point from Stephen Kavanagh widened the margin still further. In the final moments of the game a superb effort from Ciarán Finn forced an excellent save from the Simonstown goalie who managed to turn his goal-bound drive over the bar to leave the final score at 2-14 to 0-6.

Overall, it was a very solid performance from Donaghmore/Ashbourne but there will be tougher challenges in the weeks and months ahead.
