Junior “D” Championship HT Donaghmore / Ashbourne 1-4 Gael Colmcille 0-4 The Donaghmore / Ashbourne Junior ‘D’s continued their championship campaign with a win over Gael Colmcille in Walterstown. The first half, from a Don/ Ash perspective, was all about the scoring prowess of Declan Mulvey and Danny Clarke. However, the supply lines to them were working extremely well, with Sean Smyth, Tom Dreaper and Sean Benville making sure lots of ball went forward. First blood went to Donaghmore / Ashbourne in the 6th minute, a free converted by Declan Mulvey. This score was cancelled out inside two minutes by Gael Colmcille, with a point from play. Declan Mulvey followed up his initial point by a further brace of pointed frees, on 13 and 16 minutes respectively. Donaghmore / Ashbourne never let up with the pressure, Sean Benville’s scoring attempt crashing into the woodwork, before Gael Colmcille regained possession and put over a point on 20 minutes. The Gael Colmcille keeper pulled off a magnificent double save before being beaten by a well-taken Danny Clarke goal on 23 minutes, after a superb ball in from Sean Smyth. The action moved to the Donaghmore / Ashbourne half, where Niall Moran and Rob Healy did some great defending, before the lads in green got the ball forward for another Danny Clarke point on 25 minutes. Gael Colmcille squeezed in two scores before the break, a point on 28 minutes and a free on 31 minutes, to leave the half-time score at 1-4 to 0-4, in favour of Donaghmore / Ashbourne. The second half started brightly for Donaghmore / Ashbourne, with Declan Mulvey converting a free a mere two minutes in. Gael Colmcille then had a interval of intense activity in the Don/ Ash half, with Terry Bruton in goal making two good stops in succession, and Rob Healy both defending well and distributing well from the back line. Brian Fitzgerald got on the scoreboard on ten minutes, with a point of his own after excellent work in the middle of the park. A Gael Colmcille counter-attack was kept in check by sterling work from Michael Mc Cabe and Mattie Finn. John Mc Gleenan was next name of the scoresheet, with a point on 13 minutes, followed by a brace of Declan Mulvey frees. Donaghmore made a treble substitution at this point, with Padraig Williams coming on for Danny Clarke, Sean Breslin for Eoin Caffrey, and Ross Tormey for Cian Maguire. John Mc Gleenan added to his tally on 18 minutes, before Donaghmore / Ashbourne’s final substitutions Stephen Donaghue for John Mc Gleenan and Mattie Davis for Terry Bruton. An unfortunate goal-line mix-up led to a Gael Colmcille goal on the 24th minute, which was followed by points on the 25th and 27th minutes respectively, the first a free. Donaghmore / Ashbourne struck back with a Declan Mulvey free on the 31 minute mark, and a Ross Tormey point on 32 minutes. Final score of the evening was 1-12 to 1-5, with the honours going to Donaghmore / Ashbourne.
