B League Division 7 Round 3 – Saturday 4th April 2009 Venue: Ashbourne Full Time: Donaghmore/Ashbourne 2-14 Summerhill 1-6 Half Time: Donaghmore/Ashbourne 2-3 Summerhill 1-6 Donaghmore/Ashbourne maintained their 100 per cent unbeaten record in B League Division 7 with this highly impressive display at Ashbourne. Donaghmore/Ashbourne began the first half playing against a slight breeze and were straight away under pressure. Summerhill opened with two early points and much of the possession. The home side soon found their rhythm however and began taking control around the middle of the field. Gerry Kelly and Sean Smith were strong in the middle and Rossa O’Donnell and Ross Hanway were racing forward at every opportunity. Summerhill were finding it hard to get their hands on the ball. This was capitalized on when a speculative ball into the visitors’ goal area was fisted to the net by Gary Lawlor. The home side built on this with points from Timmy O’Regan on 20, 23, and 25 minutes. Strong runs towards goal by O’Regan and Ross Tormey were opening the visitors’ defence. Ross Hanway converted a penalty to the net during this period to open a sizeable lead for the hometeam. Summerhill’s response was measured and they found the net with a long range effort on 25 minutes. The visiting side dominated the possession until half-time and added points on 27, 28, and 29 minutes to draw level. Donaghmore/Ashbourne have made a habit of moving up a gear in the second half of matches and this time was no different. The pace of the game increased and despite two early wides possession was flowing to the local team forwards. Brian Fitzgerald put the home side back in front with a point and this was backed up with further scores from O’Regan, Gerry Kelly and a brace from Tormey. Ross Hanway advanced forward to add another and substitute Paudie Ryan finished a fine move with a score from 30 yards. Ventures forward by Summerhill were broken down as they were unable to penetrate sufficiently for a score. The Donaghmore/Ashbourne were not in any mood to let their guard down and they returned each ball forward with efficiency. An attack broken down by Niall Moran found it’s way to Rossa O’Donnell. He fed the ball to Ross Tormey who ran 40 yards finishing with a long range point for the finest score of the day. This was a fine display by Donaghmore/Ashbourne and they can be pleased with the progress being made this year. There were many patches of exciting flowing football with a good mix of youth and experience in the team.
