Senior Championship Round 2

Sunday 3rd May 2009, Skryne
Full-Time; Navan O’Mahony’s 0-14 Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-7
Half-Time; Navan O’Mahony’s 0-7 Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-5

If anyone thought Navan O’Mahony’s had lost their hunger for more silverware they are truly mistaken based on this display at Skryne. Both teams came into this encounter on the back of an opening round defeat and Donaghmore/Ashbourne were met with a determined O’Mahony’s side eager to make up for this.
The Ashbourne side were behind from start to finish and but for their propensity for hard work helping them avoid a heavier loss. An injury epidemic continues to hit Donaghmore/Ashbourne who went into this game without six regulars and while they never lacked for effort it was difficult throughout to see how they could carve out a win.

The Navan side got off to a strong start with a point after 30 seconds. This was followed with points on 2, 3, and 5 minutes. Andrew Tormey opened the Donaghmore/Ashbourne’s account with a point on 9 minutes but we were finding the going tough. The county champions of ‘08 were physically stronger with slick movements to attack. They were moving the ball around with impressive authority and confidence. Donaghmore/Ashbourne were not helped when Colm O’Mealoid went off injured after 8 minutes. Rory O’Connor held his own at midfield and Danny McShane pulled off some fine saves in goal. Andrew Tormey was finding space and added four more points before halftime.
The second period continued in the same format with O’Mahony’s extending their lead on 31, 32 and 33 minutes. The reigning champions had found an extra gear in the second-half to pull away leaving their opponents somewhat outplayed. The Donaghmore/Ashbourne response was from John Broderick and Sean Harmon who found points on 45 and 56 minutes but this was a meagre return for a lot of effort. This revival was not enough and we badly needed a goal to inject some momentum into our challenge. The Ashbourne side did carve out two half-chances with Tormey having a close-range shot blocked. O’Mahony’s added pints on 42, 47, 52 and 60 minutes. The scoreline could have been made worse was it not for the sharpness of Donaghmore/Ashbourne netminder Danny McShane who was called upon to make two excellent saves.
The bar is set high by Navan O’Mahony’s and there is plenty to learn for the young Donaghmore/Ashbourne side.
