B League Division 6

Sunday 11th October 2009, Ballinacree
Fulltime; Donaghmore/Ashbourne 2-14 St. Brigids 3-6
Halftime; Donaghmore/Ashbourne 2-5 St. Brigids 1-3

Donaghmore/Ashbourne made the long trip to Ballinacree for a winner takes all encounter in the promotion stakes. With promotion the prize for the victor it was the east Meath side who advance to the B League Division 6 final.

With the conditions ideal for flowing football the game started as such. St. Brigids applied the early pressure but it was the visitors who were first on the scoreboard. Ross Tormey found himself in space close to the St. Brigids goal and he fed Timmy O'Regan who crashed to the corner of the net for a dream start. Donaghmore/Ashbourne were bursting forward well and it wasn't long until they had the ball in the net again. This time Daniel Cullen made a fine run forward and finished well to the net. A point effort for St. Brigids fell short into the arms of Colin Garry. As he attempted to clear his lines, the ball was knocked from his hands and into the net. St. Brigids needed this goal to stay in touch. As the teams left for the interval it was the visitors in control with a five point margin.

St. Brigids upped the tempo in the second period and pointed twice in quick succession. They raced forward with support but Donaghmore/Ashbourne were not in a resigned mood. As Timmy O'Regan enjoyed space he slotted over a brace to keep the visitors ahead. Mick Doherty also got on the scoresheet with a well taken point when it was badly needed. St. Brigids shot to the net midway through the half but it was always going to be Donaghmore/Ashbourne's day. Ross Tormey was enjoying the majority of breaks around the middle while Shane O'Sullivan came off the bench to add two points. St. Brigids could have reduced the margin from a penalty with 10 minutes remaining but they shot wide. At the final whistle another penalty was awarded to the home side. This time they converted appropiately but the vicory had already been secured for Donaghmore/Ashbourne.

As promotion is now secured from B League Division 6, Cathal Cullen, Mick Doherty, PJ Durkan and Vinny Carton should be commended for this achievement. This is the club's fouth string adult football side with a strong belnd of youth and experience. With a panel of 24 players available for selection today the well of talent available at the club appears far from shallow.
