Donaghmore Ashbourne’s 2nd team made an impressive start to their 2010 Junior A championship campaign with a 7 point winning margin over O’Mahony’s in Dunderry. O”Mahony’s opened the scoring on 4 minutes but Keith Scally equalised for Donaghmore Ashbourne a minute later. The sides traded scores again with Scally getting his second of the evening on 7 minutes. Although both sides played entertaining open football it was Donaghmore who got the better of possession and extended their lead with points from Faolán Smith (10th minute) and in form Scally on 12 and 17 minutes. The Navan side did reply with two points to reduce the deficit to a single point heading for the break before the game was interrupted with an injury to one of the Navan players who came down heavily on his ankle when going for a ball and he required hospital treatment. When the game resumed 14minutes later Donaghmore Ashbourne were quickest into action and Smith was on hand to flick a ball into the O’Mahony’s net. O’Mahony’s did reply with a point on the stroke of half time. With midfield pairing of Ian Dowd and Kevin Lanigan in control Donaghmore Ashbourne were always in control of the second half. Minor player Mattie Devine opened his adult football account with two frees on 33 and 37 minutes respectfully the later coming after an O’Mahony’s free on 35 minutes. The sides traded a brace of points late in the third quarter with Smith and Scally on target again for Donaghmore Ashbourne. The score of the game came from Sean Harmon on 46 minutes when he collected a ball on the wing, evaded a number of tackles and pointed from 25 meters out. Smith extended Donaghmore Ashbourne’s lead with points on 48 and 52 minutes. O’Mahony’s final score of the game came from a free on 56 minutes but Donaghmore Ashbourne had the final say with a Sean Harmon point on full time. Overall it was a good solid team performance from Donaghmore Ashbourne with the defence solid, the midfield pairing of Dowd and Lanigan in control and upfront Harmon, Scally and Smith were in fine form.
