Full Time: Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-04 Ballivor 0-14 Half Time: Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-01 Ballivor 0-09
Despite making an impressive start Donaghmore Ashbourne’s 2nd team were always second best to a very organised and hard working Ballivor team in this round 2 Junior A championship game. With many supporters only parking their cars Keith Scally found the net within the first minute to give Donaghmore Ashbourne and early 3 point lead. From that point on Ballivor took control of the game and dominated proceedings for the remaining 60 minutes. In summary they controlled midfield, showed great movement and moved the ball quickly. The first half of the game was very much a one way system with Ballivor pegging the Donaghmore Ashbourne team into their own half. Having taken two of their first four chances Ballivor reduced the deficit to a single point within 6 minutes and it took a further 6 minutes to draw the sides level. The lead changed hands against Ballivor on 13 minutes and three further unanswered points were registered by Ballivor before Faolán Smith got Donaghmore Ashbourne’s second score on 26 minutes. The revival was quickly quenched late in the half when Ballivor extended their lead with two unanswered points. The second half was a little more even although as a spectacle it was tough viewing for the supporters as it was littered with frees with some decisions (on both sides) questionable. Ballivor were first out of the blocks with a point in the first minute but Sean Harmon replied on 33 minutes with a fisted point from a high ball. The sides traded points late in the third quarter with both scores coming from frees with Smith scoring for Donaghmore Ashbourne from 14 meters. The early part of the final quarter saw both sides trade points again with Morgan replying for Donaghmore Ashbourne. With Eric Callaghan getting a second yellow card on 57 minutes Ballivor had the final say of the evening with two unanswered points from frees in injury time. With the exception of Joey Long at full back, and Ian Dowd carrying a solo midfield fight this was a disappointing performance from Donaghmore Ashbourne but if Ballivor had taken some of their 14 wides it could have been a worse score line for the Moors.
