Feis Cup First Round
Donaghmore / Ashbourne vs St Colmcille’s

HT    Donaghmore / Ashbourne    0-6    St Colmcille’s    0-5
FT    Donaghmore/ Ashbourne    0-12    St Colmcille’s    0-8

The first round tie between Donaghmore/Ashbourne and St Colmcilles was a low-scoring affair, with frees making up a good proportion of the scores. We had good movement going forward, but we had a number of attacks breaking down on the 21 and 14 metres lines, as Colmcille’s threw all their men behind the ball.

Ian Dowd was on in midfield in place of Bryan Menton, who was on duty for Meath. Rory O’ Connor won the throw, and a good pass from Ian Dowd to Andy Tormey resulted in our first point. The action moved to our half, where Colmcille’s had three shots, two of which they pointed. Their next shot was safely gathered by Danny Mc Shane in goal, whose kick-out was distributed forward by Colm O Mealoid, When our progress was halted, Eoighan Riordan converted the free for our second point. St Colmcille’s cancelled out our score almost immediately, which spurred the Donaghmore / Ashbourne lads, with some great running from Ciaran Ellis, interplay with Ian Dowd, culminating in a point for Andy Tormey. Ian then put over a point of his own, before we lost possession, with some robust defending from Seans Harmon and Curran, Tadgh Kelly and Martin Lynch, restricting the opposition’s goal scoring chances. David Morgan also tracked back from time to time, helping out the defence, as did Iarlaith O’ Donnell. We did, however, concede a free which was followed in quick succession by another point. Ciaran Ellis was continuing his scything runs through the field, and a solo effort went just wide,  We won the kick-out, sending the ball directly back in, where a free conceded by St Colmcilles was put over by Andy, before we kept up the pressure, but the two efforts went wide. Rory O’ Connor in midfield made a fine catch  which he passed to Ciaran Ellis in a slick move, whose progress was halted to award us yet another free, which Eoighan Riordan obligingly put over the bar, in one of the last moves of the first half. Colmcille’s last scoring effort ended up safe in Danny’s hands, and was subsequently cleared forward by Ciaran, before referee Liam O’ Brien blew for the break. Scoreline at the break was 0-6 points to 0-5, in  favour of Donaghmore / Ashbourne.

There was one change at half time, with Tony Morgan coming on in place of Iarlaith O’ Donnell. Donaghmore / Ashbourne was first out of the blocks with a fine point from Ciaran Ellis. We then had a good interval of play for the lads, with great battling and runs forward from Sean Curran, feeding the ball to Rory Mc Guire and David and Tony Morgan and Kevin Lanigan.  We were awarded two frees in succession, one from either side, which were converted by Eoighan Riordan and Andy Tormey respectively, and then followed by a point from Tony Morgan. The initiative moved briefly to the St Colmcille’s lads, with some sustained pressure on our goal, resulting in our conceding a free which was duly converted. The kick-out was lobbed straight back in, but was skilfully blocked by Danny, whose long- range kick out triggered another attack, resulting in a wide and a pointed free, scored by Andy Tormey. At this point, we had a few changes of personnel, with Keith Scally and Padraig Finn coming on in place of Kevin Lanigan and Eoighan Riordan. St Colmcille’s then streamed forward into our half, putting our defence and goal under a great deal of pressure. It was nothing which couldn’t be dealt with, as Danny made a fine save and a brilliant block by Sean Harmon ensured we wouldn’t be conceding a goal or penalty in the last few minutes, at the expense of a free, which notched up another point for the opposition. Danny’s short kick to Colm O’ Mealoid resulted in a fine solo run, evading all the Colmcille’s lads, and scoring a point of his own! The final action of the tie was a final point from Colmcille’s, to leave the score at the final whistle 0-12 to 0-8.
