It was quite a disjointed game, with multiple frees ensuring that there was very little flow to the game – many of the attacks were interrupted before they came to anything. The first ten minutes of the match consisted of Royal Gaels camping in our half, with our goal under constant attack. Our defence withstood all comers, with Aoife, Shauna, Grainne, and Anna their usual consistent selves, but recent recruit to the U-19’s Michelle showed tremendous maturity for a young player, and was well able to hold her own. The deadlock between the sides was broken after about ten minutes into the half, with Maire scoring the first point from a free. Royal Gaels then notched up two points from play, before Maggie levelled the score at two points all. Kyna came on for Caroline at this point. We had more of the ball at this stage of the game, with two goal –line scrambles which may have resulted in penalties on another day. Our midfield of Maire and Mary Kate kept up the pressure, feeding in ball . Donaghmore / Ashbourne were rewarded for their efforts when Maggie put the ball in the back of the net for our only goal. Royal Gaels responded with a solitary point, and at the half-time whistle the score stood at 0-3 to 1-2, in Donaghmore’s favour. The second half was a frustrating affair, with Royal Gaels winning the breaking ball and getting it up to our square, where it was bundled our for a 45 to the opposition. The action remained in our half, with Ciara making a fine save, but the Donaghmore/ Ashbourne’s style of defence appeared to leave them open to conceding frees, and so Royal Gaels put over one free, and one point from play, before play moved to the other end of the pitch. We had a good passage of play where we were able to keep the ball in the opposition half, and had a couple of wides before Hayley scored our third point. Caroline came back onto the pitch at this stage, to replace Ali. Two frees on the trot resulted in two more points for the opposition, whose confidence rose as the Donaghmore/ Ashbourne ladies grew disheartened. Despite the efforts to get the ball into the opposition half, our square remained under siege . We conceded two points from play before Ciara pulled off an excellent save, but which was cancelled out almost straight away by the concession of a goal in the last five minutes. The ladies battled to the end, but there were no further scores and the match finished at 1-9 to 1-3, to Royal Gaels. We may have bowed out of the 2009 Championship, but the performances of both Michelle and Maggie, in their first year playing U-19, gives us much to look forward to for the 2010 campaign !
