B League Division 6
Tuesday 1st September 2009 – Ashbourne
Fulltime; Donaghmore/Ashbourne 2-12 Drumbaragh 0-5
Halftime; Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-5 Drumbaragh 0-2
Donaghmore/Ashbourne are on the verge of promotion with one game left following this fluid display against Drumbaragh. In a much improved performance the defeat of a last week was firmly put behind. Playing against a strong breeze in the opening half Donaghmore/Ashbourne’s tactics of maintaining possession moving forward was evident. Aonghus O’Maoilmhichil, Robbie O’Connor and Ross Tormey were making piercing runs forward. It was the visitors who opened their account first with a point on 11 minutes. Donaghmore/Ashbourne responded with a brace from Timmy O’Regan to take the lead. Drumbaragh were using the elements well and they drew level on 18 minutes with a point. Both teams were guilty of wasted opportunities but it was the home side who were playing with greater efficiency. Following the introduction of Conor Carey for the injured Sean Benville, Donaghmore/Ashbourne went ahead again with consecutive points from Paul Cullen and Cathal Regan. This was a lead they wouldn’t relinquish and their plight was further enhanced with a goal on 25 minutes. A loose ball in the square was scrambled to the net by Conor Carey to open a nine point gap at the break.
Donaghmore/Ashbourne began the second period as they had left off at the break. Conor Carey had settled in well since his introduction and he sot over the bar to extend the home team advantage. Further scores from Cathal Regan (2) and Ross Tormey put the tie beyond Drumbaragh’s reach. To their credit Drumbaragh were still battling and winning their fair share of possession around the middle. Some penetrating runs forwards kept pressure on the opposition defence and they were rewarded with two pointed frees midway through the half. Staunch defending from Odhran O’Donnell and attacks from Robbie O’Connor made sure the majority of possession rested with the east Meath forwards. Timmy O’Regan was as nimble as a wide receiver and he was causing havoc in the Drumbaragh fullback line. On 55 minutes a Ross Tormey point attempt dropped short and Colin Garry was on hand to fist to the net. This essentially finished the game as a contest. Drumbaragh pointed again but Carey and O’Regan closed out the game with scores to complete a well deserved victory. Long before the final whistle sounded the winners had been declared.
