Round 8 – 1st September 2009
Venue: Donaghmore Ashbourne

Full Time: Donaghmore Ashbourne 2-11 St. Peter’s Dunboyne 3-05
Half Time: Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-04 Peter’s Dunboyne 1-03

Donaghmore Ashbourne’s second team bounced back from their recent defeat to Skryne to record a narrow victory at home to St.Peter’s of Dunboyne. This victory still keeps alive their chances of a league final place although it will depend on a couple of other results going their way over the remaining few games of the competition.
As always in Killegland West there was a breeze blowing towards the town end goals and the visitors had it’s advantage in the first half. They started strong and had found the back of the net within two minutes of the throw in.

Although Donaghmore Ashbourne hit the post and the crossbar in the next two consecutive attacks they failed to register a score and by the end of the 10th minute found themselves further being as the visitors registered two point in consecutive minutes.
Although Donaghmore Ashbourne did have plenty of possession in the opening period they were guilty of giving away possession too often. However they did continue to work hard and opened their account with a point from Stephen Kavanagh on 12 minutes. It took a further 5 minutes for the home side to add to their account but it was worth waiting for. Keith Scally collected the ball on the 45 meter line and broke away from the defence. He lost his marker and raced towards goal where he slotted long into the corner of the net. Donaghmore Ashbourne had another goal chance on 18th minutes but the hit the metalwork for the third time in the evening. Rossa O Donnell brought the sides level on 23 minutes when he pointed from his weaker foot after some good possession work by the home side.

Both sides traded points minutes later with John Paul Lynch opening his account with a point on 25 minutes to cancel out the visitors score from a free. Paul Gilligan gave the home side the lead when his long range free was tipped over the bar by the St. Peter’s keeper on 27 minutes.
Like the first half the visitors were first to score and they had regained the lead on 32 minutes when they fired home a penalty. Paul Gilligan pointed from a free on 34 minutes to leave the minimum between the sides again.

As the second period progressed Donaghmore Ashbourne took a better grip of the game but never really pulled away from the visitors. Points from Iarlaith O’Donnell and Keith Scally restored Donaghmore Ashbourne’s lead. The sides traded points mid way through the half with J.P. Casserly and Ian Dowd pointing for Donaghmore Ashbourne. Going into the final stages of the game Donaghmore Ashbourne extended their lead with another Scally point before St. Peter’s fired home with a goal to regain the lead.
Donaghmore Ashbourne did have the final say with Iarlaith O’Donnell scoring a goal and a point to give the home side a narrow three point victory.
Although Donaghmore Ashbourne were guilty of losing a lot of possession during the game it was an improved performance on their last out and they did show great spirit to finish strong and collect both points.
