The Shield Final was a game of two halves, with Boardsmill dominant in the first half, with Donaghmore / Ashbourne getting into the game in the second half – unfortunately,  the deficit proved too much to claw back, and Boardsmill ran out winners in the end.

The sides were evenly matched in the first ten minutes or so of the encounter, with Boardsmill winning the throw in and scoring a point in the first minute, assisted by a very stiff wind which was to prove a factor in the game. Our kick out was lobbed straight back in, with Ciara making a fine point-blank save.   We struggled to get the ball back out field, and when it came back in again, a penalty was awarded against us after an attacker was deemed fouled in the square. Ciara saved the penalty however, and Boardsmill contented themselves with a point after they regained possession and stormed forward. We won the kick – out , with Roisin and Ali working to get the ball to Catriona, who netted our first goal.  After this initial passage of play, Boardmill started to up the pace and were able to score points from 20 – 30 metres out, as the wind was so strong that he ball was greatly assisted on its way.  A total of one goal and twelve  unanswered points were scored against us in a row, with the ball being pinged in over the heads of the defenders , with Meath county player Jenny Rispin playing a big part in the onslaught. We then managed to curtail the siege slightly, getting the ball up to Aisling who scored our first point of the day. It was to be our last score before the break – after the air attacks, Boardsmill now changed tactics and seemed to concentrate on a ground offensive – they pounded our goal incessantly, and succeeded in netting twice and scoring two more points before the break, to leave the half-time score at 3-14 to 1-1 to Boardsmill.

Immediately after the break, Boardsmill resumed the attack on our goal, but an early intervention from Ciara, and hassling afterwards, ensured that a possible goal was degraded to a 45, which was then put over the bar . Another point followed, before Karen came on for Ailish and Aideen came on for Roisin. We then had a good passage of play, with Jenny giving us a boost by scoring a sweet individual point. Our passing and movement of the ball had improved considerably, and we put another brace of points on the board, courtesy of Hayley. Ali Fitz came on for Aisling, and one of our forays forward resulted in a Boardsmill defender putting the ball over the line for a Donaghmore ’45. Jenny took the ’45, and the ball was worked to Catriona, who notched up another point, then pounced on the kickout to net another goal for us. At this stage, somewhat against the run of play, the opposition won the kickout and scored another goal. Another good save form Ciara, and Grainne and Mary-Kate combined to get the ball to Ali Leahy, who was having a good game on the wing. Ali was fouled, and Catriona putting the resulting free over the bar for another point. Kyna came on for Ali Leahy, and Ciara  came on for Shauna.  We kept possession, with our passing game starting to flow again, with Eva, Mary – Kate, Hayley , Ali Fitz and Kyna combining to keep the ball in front of the Boardsmill goal.

Karen showed great composure to fist a ball that looked to be going over the bar, straight into the opposition net. It was a very well-taken goal – and by a player who normally plays in defence !  Catriona and Eva followed this up by scoring a point each, but Boardsmill came back at us with a vengeance ; Ciara managed to get her fingertips to the ball, but it toppled over her head and into the net. We kept up the pressure until the bitter end, but Boardsmill ran out eventual winners with a final scoreline of 5-16 to 3-8.

The Feis Sup is the only remaining Senior competition, and we will notify of any upcoming games.
