B League Division 4

Tuesday June 16th – Ashbourne

Full-time; Donaghmore/Ashbourne 4-3 St. Vincent’s 0-8
Half-time; Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-3 St. Vincent’s 0-5

The last time these teams met the Junior B trophy was the prize. There was no silverware on offer today but this did not deter Donaghmore/Ashbourne from a highly motivated performance against St. Vincent’s.
From the throw in Donaghmore/Ashbourne dominated proceedings. Within a minute Ross Hanway had opened the scoring. Daniel Cullen added to this on 2 minutes before St. Vincent’s struck for a point a minute later. This score ignited the visitors and they dominated the next quarter. They added points on 5 and 9 minutes. The home side were dealt a blow after 10 minutes when the impressive Podge McCabe went off injured, but his replacement Cathal Field was equal to the task. Despite their superior possession St. Vincent’s could not make the home side pay adequately. The Donaghmore/Ashbourne goaltender Matt Davis was instrumental as he produced a save from the top drawer on 20 mins. A low shot to the right post was pushed away by the sharp Davis to keep the home side in touch. St. Vincent’s were playing with a strong breeze and could only generate another point on 28 minutes. The home side had a perfect response and following a Daniel Cullen point Ross Tormey made a break through the centre to make amends for an earlier wide. He buried the ball in the St. Vincent’s net to put the home team ahead at the break.

The second half was all about Donaghmore/Ashbourne as the visitors struggled to cross the halfway line. Daniel Cullen worked superbly to win a free from 14 metres. Ross Hanway found the top corner of the net rather fortuitously from the spot kick to diminish the St. Vincent’s effort. Three minutes later the ball found it’s way to Shane Rock who put all his power behind the ball to crash home to the net. St. Vincent’s didn’t lie down and enjoyed their fair share of possession in the second period. They were holding possession very well and making good runs through the middle. They struck points on 32 and 40 mins. Thomas Cotter regained control in the middle and Donaghmore/Ashbourne finished the game stronger. A breaking ball in the middle fell to Cathal Field. He ran through he St. Vincent’s defence and flashed the ball past the keeper for the score of the game. The visitors’ only response was a late point on 30 minutes but their challenge had evaporated. Long before the final whistle the winner was declared.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne entered this game short much of the team which had ground out a draw against St. Pat’s the previous week. They produced a sterling performance which shows the quality in depth available in the club at present.
