Junior D Championship Round 3

Sunday 5th July 2009, Castletown

Full-Time; Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-25 Meath Hill 0-4
Half-Time; Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-14 Meath Hill 0-3

Donaghmore/Ashbourne booked their place in the knockout stage of this year’s Junior D Championship with a slick performance at the charming Castletown grounds on Sunday.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne have a habit of starting games slowly in the Junior D championship this year and this did not escape them again. Meath Hill enjoyed the early possession and opened the scoring from a free on 2 minutes. This sparked the east Meath side into action and they dominated proceedings for the rest of the game. Danny Cullen was first to get his name on the score sheet on 3 minutes with Timmy O’Regan adding a brace on 5 and 6 minutes. Declan Mulvey and Rossa O’Donnell added two points each as Meath Hill’s scoring opportunities were limited to free kicks. They converted two on 14 and 18 minutes but the Donaghmore/Ashbourne machine was at full steam. Eunan Cawley, Declan Mulvey and O’Regan (2) increased the margin further as Thomas Cotter and Sean Smith dominated midfield. Ventures forward by the north Meath side were being swept up by the alert Conor Carey and Paul Finglas. A heavy shower poured down but Donaghmore/Ashbourne were intent on pouring on the pressure until halftime. Eoin Caffrey was moved to full forward and he cashed in with points on 24 and 28 minutes. Declan Mulvey brought the half to a close with a well worked point on 29 minutes to leave an eleven point gap at the break.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne began the second period as they left off in the first. Mark Mulvey and Paul Finglas were making piercing runs forward and this resulted in scores from Caffrey (34 mins) and O’Regan (37 mins). O’Regan was rolling back the years and producing a vintage display. He sailed over four free kicks between the 40th and 46th minutes. Sean Smith took a long range point on 47 minutes and O’Regan added again on 51 minutes. The Meath Hill challenge had all but evaporated as they continued to battle on. Their centre half forward found some space on the right wing and he worked over a nice point on 51 minutes. The crowning score of the game came on 55 minutes with a goal for Donaghmore/Ashbourne. Sean Benville ran through the Meath Hill defence and following his point attempt dropping short he found himself in possession infront to goal. A rasping shot by Benville was saved by the Meath Hill goalkeeper and Mark Byrne was on hand to rattle in the rebound. Timmy O’Regan closed out the scoring for the day with his eleventh point on 25 minutes.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne will be satisfied with the intensity of this performance. There is quality in depth with youth and experience on this panel and limiting the opposition to one score from play was just reward for the effort.
