Full Time: Donaghmore Ashbourne 0-11 Simonstown Gaels 0-07
Half Time: Donaghmore Ashbourne 0-07 Simonstown Gaels 0-04

Donaghmore Ashbourne’s second team continued their good run of form with a hard earned victory over Simonstown Gaels in Ashbourne. Both sides played an honest and open game of football with little between the teams. The visitors who had the advantage of the wind at their backs in the first half started off the brightest of the teams. By the end of the first quarter they led by 0-04 to 0-01 with Donaghmore Ashbourne’s score coming from a Ross Hanway free on 6 minutes.

Donaghmore Ashbourne had the better of the second quarter and points from Ciaran Byrne on 18 minutes, Rory Maguire 20 minutes and Ross Hanway on 23 minutes had the sides level. Although Simonstown Gaels did have plenty of possession the home side’s defence stood strong and at the other end Ross Hanway had edged the Donaghmore Ashbourne with a free on 27 minutes.
Two further Hanway frees on 28 and 30 minutes gave Donaghmore Ashbourne a 0-07 to 0-04 lead at the break.
Donaghmore Ashbourne, with the wind advantage for the second period had extended the lead to five points within two minutes of the restart. Cathal Field pointed on 31 minutes with Hanway grabbing his sixth of the evening a minute later.
To their credit Simonstown Gaels did not surrender and managed to reduce the deficit to 2 points with three unanswered points early in the third quarter.
Going into the final stage of the game both sides worked hard for the two points on offer but two late points from Paul Gilligan on 59 minutes and an injury time point from Ian Dowd was enough to see Donaghmore Ashbourne run out narrow winners.
It was a good overall team performance from the home side.
