Donaghmore Ashbourne’s third team booked a place in the Junior C championship final after a good team performance saw off St. Michaels in Sensechalstown on Saturday evening. The Carlanstown men got off to the perfect start when they found the back of the net within the opening 15 seconds. Although Donaghmore Ashbourne opened the scoring with a pointed free from Fionan Mulvihill on 3 minutes St. Michaels restored the 3 point lead with a point a minute later. At this point in the game it looked to be tight contest as both sides had an eye on the place in the final however once Donaghmore Ashbourne settled, they appeared to play the better football for the remainder of the game. David Carey pointed on 7 minutes with a well taken score and two quick points from John Lynch at the end of the first quarter brought the sides level. Donaghmore Ashbourne continued to dominate the remainder of the first half but managed to hit 5 wides in this period and the sides entered the break level on the score board 1-01 to 0-04.
Playing with the aid of the breeze in the second half Donaghmore Ashbourne took the lead for the first time in the game with a good solo point from Evan Rogers within a minute of the restart. David Carey extended the lead with a free on 34 minutes and Sean Smith finished off a good team score on 35 minutes.
Although St Michaels did have a number of chances in the second half they failed the raise the white flag while at the end a fitter Donaghmore Ashbourne continued to keep the score board ticking over.
Substitute Brian Fitzgerald pointed on 34 minutes with Fionan Mulvihill getting a brace on points early in the third quarter. Donaghmore Ashbourne’s final score of the evening came from Robert O’ Connor to confirm their place in the final.
