Indoor Hurling League 09
Last year a new initiative was attempted in the club to progress the status, skill and enjoyment of hurling within the club. An indoor hurling league was organised by a hurling committee. The basis of it was 6 weeks of 6 aside, hour long hurling matches in the club’s new state of the art indoor Astroturf arena. There were a set of rules put together so that the emphasis was on speed of skill and sliotar. The matches were played at a great pace, first touch was developed very quickly in order to survive. The games were free flowing and at times hard hitting but always enjoyable. With about 60 hurlers taking part it was a resounding success, with some great hurling being played, and with people being introduced and in some cases reintroduced to the wonder that is hurling.

Our junior b hurling team were out against Killyon last Sunday in the county championship

final. It was one hell of a battle. The Killyon lads thought they could play tough for the first ten minutes and
then them city boys from ashbourne would stand back and let them do what they wanted. But by f#ck were they wrong!

I've never seen so much broken hurls flung to the sideline as our lads gave timber. Granted things got a bit heated at times, but as long as noone was hurt it did nothing but add to an already exciting, full flowing, end to end match. Thanks to two goals from Brian fitz we were drawn at half time. As the second half started, the opposition attempted to pull away, through the scoring of their numbers 9 and 15 (two fine hurlers who each had marvellous matches). But our lads never let them get more than 2 points ahead. It was evident that we needed a goal if we wanted to win. And thats what was attempted. Graham Byrne put his attempt a fraction above the bar. Then brian Fitz went on one of his famous runs straight at goal and was taken down just outside the big square. This left the result to be decided by a 21 yard free. Steven Meagher stepped up to take responsibility. He was made wait a few minutes before he was let take it. (Delaying the innevitable) Then he rose the sliotar and struck it to the back of the net. (I'm fairly certain that Jack would have connected better) But who gives a f#ck how he hit it, all that matters is that it made it over the goal line. and with that Donaghmore Ashbourne

won their first county title in 15 years. Thats right 15 years. It took an awful long time to get there but by god was it worth it. It was some match, some spectacle, some result. Well done to all involved and thank you to all who came in support on the day. Thank you to Mick Doherty who took photos at the match that can be seen on the gallery section of the website.
