Last Saturday, the 2nd of May, Diarmuid O Sullivan gave the hurling community his biggest hit yet when he announced his retirement from intercounty hurling after a club game in Cork. I just felt that no hurling page, could call itself a hurling page without paying tribute to one of the finest players to put the number 3 jersey on his back.

‘Sully boy’ had been an inpenetrable force in defence for Cork ever since fellow Cork legend Jimmy Barry-Murphy gave him the call up in 1997. He came into the squad when Cork hurling was on a low. And it’s no small part he played in bringing Cork hurling back to where they belonged, as hurling’s elites. This is evident from the 4 all-stars won over his decade in red. He skillfully and passionately controlled the full-back line and any forward who was brave enough to step into the pleasure dome. It was easier to get into Coco’s on a Saturday night, then to gain access to the Cork goalmouth while Sully was on the door.

His arse pocket (when not containing a sneaky dry sliotar) is filled with 3 All-Ireland medals and 5 Munsters, and the man, suitably nicknamed ‘The Rock’, has been part of innumerable Munster and All-Ireland battles over the years (Munster 2004 comes to my mind, and who could forget his 100m point against Limerick). This is one character who will be missed in the coming championship by all who look on (especially Denis Walsh).
