Junior 2 Hurling Match Report

Date: Saturday 27th June 2009
Venue: Ratoath

Full time: Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-09 Kilmessan 2-05
Half time: Donaghmore Ashbourne 0-05 Kilmessan 1-02

Donaghmore Ashbourne’s second team continued their good run of form in the Junior 2 hurling Championship with a hard earned one point win over Kilmessan in Ratoath.
Both sides contributed well in an honest and tough game played in a hard and sporting manner. Kilmessan opened the scoring with a 30mter free in the first minute but Donaghmore Ashbourne drew level with a free from Billy Whelan on 6 minutes. Donaghmore Ashbourne took the lead on 9 minutes with another Whelan Free from 25 meters out after Ian Dowd was fouled but the lead was short lived as the sides were level from the resulting puck out and attack. Whelan added his third point just before the end of the first quarter when he struck over an excellent free from inside his own half.
Although both sides had a number of chances in the second period it was not until the 24th minute that the next score was registered. This score came to Kilmessan who had the Donaghmore back line under pressure when trying to clear and as the ball came across the goals it was scooped low into the net.
Donaghmore to their credit had the final say of the half with Whelan registering his first score from play on 29 minutes and Graham Byrne bringing the sides level just on the stroke of half time.

Donaghmore Ashbourne did have a goal chance within the first minute of the restart but Sean Benville’s ground strike went outside the post. Kilmessan did regain the lead with a free on 33 minutes but a point from substitute Brian Fitzgerald had the sides level for the 4th time a minute later.
The turning point in the game came on 37 minutes when Whelan gave Donaghmore Ashbourne the lead with a 20 meter free. From the resulting puck out Donaghmore Ashbourne returned the ball towards the Kilmessan goal and Ciaran Finn was fastest to react and fire the ball into the net with a ground strike.
Kilmessan replied with a point at the start of the final period but a great point from Fitzgerald under pressure restored the 4 point lead on 46 minutes. Although both sides tried hard the defences were on top for the final period. Donaghmore Ashbourne’s final score of the evening game came from a 20 meter Conor Carey point on 59 minutes. However with a number of minutes of injury time to be played Kilmessan did not give up and when an injury time 20 meter free was cleared off the line the follow through was pointed. In the third minute of injury time they were awarded another free on the 20 meter line and this time it hit the back of the net to leave a point between the sides. Fortunately for Donaghmore Ashbourne they won the puck out as the final whistle blew.

Overall it was a good hard earned victory that leaves Donaghmore Ashbourne on track for a playoff place.
