Donaghmore Ashbourne’s Under 14 reserve team gave a solid performance to see off a spirited O’Mahony’s side to claim the Under 14 Reserve League County title for 2009. Although the previous league encounter saw a huge margin between the teams the final in Donore was a closer affair.
Donaghmore Ashbourne opened the scoring when Paudge Twomey’s shot went just over the bar as a goal looked on. From the resulting kick out Donaghmore Ashbourne gained possession and finished off the move with a Mark Fenton goal.
Although O’Mahony’s reduced the deficit with points on 10 and 12 minutes Donaghmore Ashbourne had increased their lead with a Daniel Moulds goal at the end of the first quarter. Both sides played open attacking football in the second quarter and traded points early with Twomey getting his second of the afternoon on 20 minutes.
Twomey continued to dominate and were rewarded for his hard work after firing low to the bottom of the net after a good run on 24 minutes. O’Mahony’s to their credit had the final say of the half with a point just before the break.
The second half was an even affair with plenty of attacking football by both sides. Moulds extended the lead for Donaghmore Ashbourne on 33 minutes with O’Mahony’s replying on 40 minutes.
Moulds raised the white flag for the second time towards the end of the third quarter  but O’Mahony’s got a  lifeline a minute later when they found the net after a number of attempts.
Although the Navan’s side continued to press forward to reduce the deficit their final score of the game came on 47 minutes.
Donaghmore Ashbourne did finish the stronger and scored the final two points from Sam Murray on 49 minutes and Twomey capping a fine display with the final score on 57 minutes.
Captain Oisin O’ Byrne accepted the cup on behalf of the team.
