Donaghmore/Ashbourne Vs St Sylvester’s Malahide (Challenge) Venue: Killegland West Referee: Martin Mannering Time: 2:00pm 7th March HT Donaghmore/Ashbourne 4 - 09 to 0 - 00 FT Donaghmore/Ashbourne 8 -12 to 1- 05 Team: Megan Power, Grace O’ Sullivan, Grace Beggy, Maggie Randle (3,4) , Michelle Peel (1,1) , Sophia Byrne (0,1), Ciara Byrne, Sophie Geogheagan, Rebecca Walton, Kate Heffernan, Shelby Leahy (2,3) , Shauna Lawton (1,1) , Lauren Lawton (0,1) , Laura Andrews (1,0), Siofra Cleary, Sarah Browne, Caroline Brothwood, Roisin Doherty. Subs: (unused because of forthcoming U-19’s match) Maire O’ Shaughnessy, Rachael Fenton, Kyna O’ Connor, Shauna Hutton. Given that Under-16 Ladies have not had any competitive fixtures as yet, St Sylvester’s visit gave the girls a taste of match action which will be of great benefit when the season gets underway. Two of our Ladies played with St Sylvester’s, as they had a squad of thirteen players for the match. Donaghmore/Ashbourne were out of the blocks straight away from the whistle, and after clocking up a brace of wides, the scoring started in earnest. In the first half, Maggie, Shelby, Michelle ,and Sophie all got on the scoreboard for us, putting the St Sylvester’s defence under a great deal of pressure. Shauna Lawton replaced Sophia, and Roisin came on for Sarah. Most of our squad are very experienced, some having played upwards from Acorns, in addition to county and above-age playing. Many of our squad play school football as well. All of this experience, in addition to speed and skill, resulted in a half-time score of 4-9 to no score. At half-time, Michelle and Shelby volunteered to play for St Sylvester’s, and they provided some vim for the opposition – so much so that in the first few moment of the second half, Malahide registered their first point, courtesy of Michelle! The second half was more evenly balanced, with tit-for tat scoring, Lauren, Sophie, Maggie and Laura scoring for Donaghmore, with Shelby and Michelle clocking up 1 goal and another 4 points for St Sylvester’s. It was a clean, enjoyable match (certainly for us!), a very positive result for the girls, but we must bear in mind that we will be facing stiffer challenges in future. |
