This was the first meeting of the Senior League finalists from 2008, and it got off to a brisk start under lights on pitch 1. We were against the wind in the first half. Dunboyne were fast out of the blocks, winning the throw-in and getting the ball upfield,  where they scored the first point of the match. Our midfield  won the kickout, and  Catriona worked the ball down and scored our first point . This was followed by a goal from Hayley . Dunboyne, unfortunately, are a different proposition from other teams in that they do their best to combat our speedy players running through midfield.  Normally Mary- Kate, Catriona, Anna , Eva and Maire  can run rampant through the centre or wings, get the ball to the forwards to score, or score themselves. This resistance manifested itself with two points in quick succession from Dunboyne,  then Ciara made a very good save . The initiative went back to the opposition who scored 3 further unanswered points.

Our Ladies seemed to run into traffic wherever they went, Dunboyne penning them in to a congested midfield. Anna and Mary- Kate managed to get the ball out of midfield, up to Kyna, who hit the inside of the post  with the ball, ball behind the line , goal given. Dunboyne retaliated almost directly, with a second goal of their own. Aoife was replaced by Aideen  after sustaining a knock – this was her second football match of the day ! Every time one of our ladies got the ball she was hounded and harried – we also gave away a couple of frees which turned into scores, three points in succession before Catriona turned the tide and  scored two points of her own.  The last score of the first half was a point for Dunboyne.

The second half started with Lizzy replacing Karen , first score was a point for Dunboyne. Eva and Catriona worked the ball upfield between them, evading the opposition, Catriona putting in a great block to keep the ball in play, got the ball to Ali, who put it in the net. Another goal for Donaghmore/ Ashbourne.  We battled hard to prevent the ball from getting into our own half, Catriona and Maire working to get the ball to Hayley, who scored a point.  Ailish came on for Ali,  Anna  was rewarded for her industry by getting a goal for herself,  shortly afterwards  Hayley clocked up another goal for her tally. We won the  resulting kickout ,  point for Catriona, then  goal for Ailish. Ali Leahy came on for Kyna . Dunboyne started to attempt to come back into the match,  and their fightback resulted in a goal. This was promptly countered by a point from Hayley and a goal from Ali L, which proved to be the last score of the match.

Final score Donash 7-6, Dunboyne 3-11. It is worth noting that five of our squad were involved earlier in the day in the All- Ireland Soccer semi-final win  over  Carrick-on-Suir . Ciara Dixon, Aoife O’ Rourke, Hayley Lawton, Shelby Leahy ( our U-14 and U-16 player ), with  Ali Leahy, Aisling Doherty and Shauna Hutton  also on the panel. They played marvellous football for the second time in a day ! Hayley is rightly thrilled at overcoming her cousin Karen Duggan’s team, who is an Ireland U-19 international. Naturally, Hayley scored in the semi too ! Well done the girls, and thanks to Lizzy who stepped in for us !
