The replay of the Senior Ladies League Final took place in Dunganny, after having been moved from both Walterstown and Ardcath. Donaghmore/ Ashbourne started off brightly, but  our challenge faded  in the second half, as Seneschalstown  came back into the match more strongly. We have much to be positive about, however – we have a very young team, we have improved visibly in the last 6-8 months, our Senior status consolidated and  mounting a viable challenge to  the 8-times Meath Champions for top spot. Both their captain and mentors admitted that we had given them a good scare, and they felt that harder campaigns improved all teams concerned.

Seneschalstown won the throw-in ( unsurprisingly, with Mary Sheridan in midfield ), and Ali Fitz’s  first touch of the ball was a good save. We won the kick-out , and got the ball to Hayley, who netted our first goal. There were a few mid-field tussles, with Jenny, Maire, Mary- Kate and Eva having to out-run and out-manoeuvre  their markers. We put the opposition goal under pressure, and won a 45, which Catriona put over the bar. We then hit a wide, and lost possession to Seneschalstown, who proceeded to score a goal and three points without reply. Ali made two good saves  in quick succession, got the ball out of the danger area  up to  Lizzy, who scored another point for us. Seneschalstown responded with a point of their own.  We got the ball up the field to the opposition square, where a defender put the ball out for a 45, from which Hayley scored another point. Grainne came on for Sorcha,  and the teams traded points, one for Seneschalstown, and one for Lizzy. Jenny bore the brunt of a few fouls, and it initially looked as if she had to come off, but she was able to continue. Lizzy scored two further points, and Catriona one,  before the opposition scored two points to leave us trailing by three points at the break.

There was no perceptible wind on the night, but there was a slight slope on the pitch, towards the goal we were defending in the second half. Seneschalstown went on the offensive straight away from throw –in, scoring two unanswered points. Aisling came on for Ailish. We rarely managed to work the ball out of midfield, due to a combination of some wayward passing and some skilful hijacking of the ball by the opposing tem. When we tried to attack the Seneschalstown goal, the entire team blanket defended.  The opposition  pointed from a 45, then scored a goal and a point, before we conceded an unlucky own goal. The Seneschalstown no 7 was sin-binned for 10 minutes for persistent fouling . We then had a good passage of play which culminated in a goal for Aisling.  Despite our extra lady, we couldn’t break down the Senechalstown defence and any time the ball was thrown in, Mary Sheridan was at a distinct height advantage.  We conceded one last point before the final whistle – full-time score was Seneschalstown 4-12 to Donaghmore / Ashbourne 2-7.
