Senior Ladies got back to their winning ways against Royal Gaels in Curragha last evening. The first half was a very tight affair, with both defences giving very little away. The second half saw Donaghmore/Ashbourne ladies put a good margin between the sides,  but towards the end  Royal Gaels started to get more of a foothold in the game, but too late in proceedings.

In the first half, scores were few and  hard-won by both sides .The Don/Ash ladies were quick out of the blocks, with midfield getting the ball up to Hayley, who scored our first point.  We then had a period of tit-for –tat scoring, with  another Hayley point separating two Royal Gaels points. Donaghmore then followed this up with two unanswered points, one each  from Eva and Aisling.  Our goal was under siege, but Aine, Aoife, Grainne, Niamh, Sorcha and most notably Karen, withstood all comers .  Royal Gaels had a free to the right of our goal, and the ball appeared to go out, but was punched back over the bar for a disputed opposition  point.  We won our kick-out, and Maire , Mary-Kate and Eva weaved their way through the obstacles, linking up with Ali and Aisling, who fed Hayley, resulting in another point. Ciara came  into her own when a determined Royal Gaels attack on goal was repelled by her, and the ball cleared out of the danger zone.  The first half finished with a relatively low scoreline of 5 points to 3, in favour of Donaghmore/Ashbourne.

The second half started off well for  Donaghmore/Ashbourne, with a well-taken point by Ali. We won the kickout, but lost possession and  Royal Gaels worked the ball into our half, but Ciara saved the goal attempt and got the ball back upfield. The Don/Ash ladies kept up the pressure,  with Jenny and Mary-Kate keeping the ball in the opposition half. Firstly Aisling scored a point, then Anna, who played an absolute stormer in the number ten jersey, was rewarded for her hard work when her cracking shot bagged the first Don/Ash goal.  Royal Gaels got their first score of the second half from a pointed free.  This was followed very promptly by another goal from Aisling.  Jeannie came on for Karen, and immediately got into the thick of things , working to get the ball forward again. Eva notched up another point, and Kyna came on for Jenny, who had defended when necessary and kept the forwards supplied.  Royal Gaels pressed forward with more urgency than before – the couple of goals had opened up a gap and the sustained pressure led to a point for them. Ali  Fitz came on for Hayley, and Eva and Kyna  got a one-two passing game going, getting the ball upfield and earning Donaghmore/Ashbourne another point. Lisa came on for Niamh, and we had an interval of alternating scoring shots, three  wides for us, and three  points for the opposition. It was too little, too late, however – the full-time score staying at 2-9 to Donaghmore/Ashbourne, 0-8 to Royal Gaels.

The next outing in the championship will be versus St Michael’s, in Skryne at 11:30 on Sunday morning. All support for the Ladies is much appreciated, as always.
