FT Donaghmore/Ashbourne 6-11 Royal Gaels 0-2
Team:
Aine Ni Mealoid, Sorcha Murtagh, Shauna Hutton, Ciara Menton, Grainne Field, Karen Menton, Mary-Kate Benville, Maire O’ Shaughnessy (0,1), Ali Leahy (0,2), Eva Mc Neilis (2,4), Kyna O’ Connor (1,0), Aisling Doherty (3,3), Hayley Jenkinson (0,1)
We had a curtailed squad of thirteen players for the above match, due to holidays and prior commitments, but Fair Play rules applied and so Royal Gaels also fielded thirteen players. Special mention must go to Shauna Hutton and Ciara Menton, making their debut appearances for the Senior Ladies team, and proving themselves well up to the challenge . Every player from midfield forward had good attempts on goal, and in almost all cases were rewarded. Our County players had to content themselves with being supportive from the sidelines !
We won the ball straight from throw-in, with Mary-Kate and Maire getting the ball into the forwards – Aisling putting the ball over for a point, and our forwards winning the subsequent kick –out sent the ball straight back in. Ali, Eva, Hayley and Kyna kept sending the ball back in to Aisling, who stayed on the 6 metre line, waiting for an opportunity to strike. This paid off, Aisling netting our first goal , and a few moments later repeated the performance to have Donaghmore / Ashbourne 2 – 1 up with about six minutes played. Royal Gaels won possession from their own kick-out after three attempts , and worked the ball down to our half. Fortunately, we had Sorcha, Karen, Shauna, Grainne and Ciara on duty, tackling, blocking, and distributing the ball forward to midfield. Aine in goal made a very good save, but the girls protected her goal so well that, thankfully it was a rare requirement as she was nursing an injury. Grainne , Maire and Mary-Kate worked well, moving the ball forward to Eva, who netted for our third goal, a looping effort which went over the goalie’s head to nestle in the net. Royal Gaels won their kick-out and tried to get the ball into our square, but two great blocks from Shauna thwarted them. Eva notched up another point, but the kick-out was sent back in courtesy of Grainne, then Ali made a great catch and sent in the ball, but it was gathered by a defender. Eva then scored another looping goal , before Mary – Kate sent in a stinging shot which was just wide. The opposition worked the ball up to the 21-metre line, where we conceded a free which was put over for a point. The last first half action was a point from Eva, to leave the score at the break 4-3 to 0-1, in favour of the Don / Ash Ladies.
After the break, there was no resting on laurels as the ladies continued where they left off, with all forwards pushing goalwards, , Ali and Kyna on the wings, Aisling and Hayley in the centre, and Eva linking up with midfield. The sustained pressure started to pay off, with a fine shot from Ali on goal bundled out for a 45, which was sent in to Aisling, who scored another goal. The kick-out was won by Don/Ash , and Hayley netted again for us, but was ruled out as square ball. Aisling added another point to her tally, before Royal Gaels managed to wrest possession away from the Don/ Ash ladies, but their attempt on goal was saved by Aine. We then had a period when the Royal Gaels goal was permanently under siege, with very good points from Ali, Eva and Aisling, before Kyna battled through a scrum of defenders to net another goal. Eva, Hayley and Ali put three more points on the scoreboard, before the opposition worked the ball forward and won a free on the edge of the square, which they pointed. The rout was complete when Maire scored a fine point after a brilliant solo run.
The match ended with a final score of 6-11 to 0-02.
