Donaghmore Ashbourne Vs Fingallians

HT    2-02  to 1-03
FT    2-04  to  3-06

Donaghmore Ashbourne team:

Ciara Dixon, Grainne Field, Aine Ni Mealoid, Jenny Moran, Anna Reidy, Maire O’ Shaughnessy. Catriona O’ Shaughnessy (0,2 ) , Michelle Johnson, Eva Mc Neilis  (1,1) , Hayley Lawton (0,1 ), Kyna O’ Connor (1,0) , Mary Kate Benville, Karen Menton, Alison Leahy, Aideen Kenny. Subs Sarah Mc Evoy, Hayley Jenkinson.

Mark and Stephen availed of the opportunity to try out some of the junior team members, in their usual and other positions, during the course of this challenge match. The team consisted of predominantly minors, so the experience and match practice will be of benefit in their quarter – final meeting with Oldcastle on Sunday next.

We started off briskly, with Eva Mc Neilis scoring a point in the first few minutes of the match. We kept the ball in Fingallians’ half, recording two wides before action moved to our half, where Ciara Dixon in goals pulled off the first of many fine saves. We worked the ball forward from defence, Catriona finding Hayley, whose pass to Kyna resulted in the first goal of the contest. Fingallians were starting to grow in confidence, their passing becoming more slick and accurate, nullifying to an extent the abilites of Catriona, Maire, Jenny, Eva and Mary Kate to cut swathes through the middle of the field.  As result of the opposition coming more into the game, Fingallians recorded first a point and then a wide, then the action then switched back to our end, where Ciara repulsed another attack on goal. This was just a short respite, because shortly afterwards Fingallians first scored a goal, then a point, before Hayley Lawton bagged a point. She was substituted shortly afterwards by Hayley Jenkinson, as a result of injury.

There was then a flurry of activity at our goal, where Grainne, Aine and Michelle were doing sterling defending, and as result, out of three scoring attempts, only one point was scored. It was end-to-end play for a while, with Anna getting the ball up the field to the Fingallians end, where we had two shots wide, before they had a wide and then two more wides for us. Just before half time Eva scored our second goal.

At half time, Mark and Stephen shuffled the pack around, with Ali and Kyna being moved and Sarah Mc Evoy coming on for Aideen.  Second half started off with both teams hitting the ground running, with Fingallians having the better of the action, and putting our goal under siege, with first a square ball, then an awarded penalty was missed, then finally a goal. They followed this up with a quick point, both teams then exchanged wides, with two 45’s awarded to Finagllians resulting in one point. Hayley came on for Alison. After another onslaught on our defences, resulting in a goal for Fingallians, another good save by Ciara and valiant defending by Michelle and Grainne, action moved up the pitch where Catriona scored two points in quick succession, after which the final score of the evening was a point to our opponents.

Final Score 2 4 to 3 6

It was a fluid game, with end to end action. It was a good workout prior to competitive games against Boardsmill for the Senior Ladies and Oldcastle for the Minor Ladies. It is also worth noting that two of our players are still playing under-16!
