Meath were unfortunate on the day all three girls played a vital part on this team throughout 2010. All three girls will do it all over again this year as they are still a very important part of the U16 Meath Camogie panel. The girls were presented with the team photo of the All Ireland Day. The presentation was made by Terry Tormey Chairperson of Donaghmore/Ashbourne Camogie Club.

Another Milestone for Donaghmore Ashbourne
The juvenile football section registered another milestone for the club as the 2011 Meath Under 14 league commenced on Saturday. This year we have entered 3 teams in the competition and are the only club to do so within the county. Our first team compete in Division 1 but unfortunately lost their opening encounter away to a strong Summerhill side. Our second team competing in Division 3 recorded a home win over Sensechalstown while our third team, missing a couple of players lost out to Simonstown Gaels in their Division 10 encounter.
PJ Moran i gCraobh Laighin Scór
Bhí PJ Moran ar an stáitse in Áth Í seachtain ón Satharn seo chaite agus ar feadh 6 nóiméad chuir sé siamsaíocht ar fáil don lucht féachana i gComórtas Scéalaíochta Daoine Fásta Scór. Bhuaigh sé arís dar ndóigh. Beidh PJ ag iomaíocht i gCraobh Laighin i mBaile Mór ar an Domhnach 13 Márta 2011 ag a 3pm. Tabhair tacaíocht dó.

Coaching Course a Success

Well done to Tony Wall and Ken Brady for their organisation of the Coaching course on Saturday morning.  They were almost 50 eager coaches in attendance. Meath goalkeeper Brendan Murphy opening the event with a session on coaching for goal keepers. Former Dublin player Paddy Christy’s session was about tackling and defending.  After a short break former Meath Player Trevor Giles gave a session on strength exercises, stretching and injury prevention. The final session was presented by former Meath trainer Sean Kelly where he concentrated on decision making and the breakdown of drills. Overall there was plenty to be learned however it’s disappointing that we didn’t have a better turnout from coaches within the club especially when this was available on our own doorstep.

The Joe Curran Tree
There was a great turnout for the planting of the Joe Curran Tree on Saturday Night before the senior game. An Oak tree to represent Joe’s work with the foundation of the Acrons was planted in his memory. Ann Kavanagh gave a great (and emotional) account of Joe and his organisation and enthusiasm for kids and how he managed to get the best out of people. Joe’s wife Patricia performed the official planting and following a couple of works from Club Chairman Peter Fitzpatrick, Fr. Jim Lynch blessed the tree. We hope to have photos posted soon.

Pitch Usage at Clubhouse

Due to recent overuse of pitch 1 and 2 at the club the grounds committee will NOT be taking any bookings for challenge matches for the foreseeable future. If the current usage trend continues it is also likely that we may have to close pitch 2 for a period of up to 2 weeks to allow the surface to recover.
Mentors are asked to move weekend training to either the Community School and Milltown pitches but to contact Jackie in advance to ensure that there is a slot available to avoid a clash of times.
Hopefully if mentors co-operate the closing of the pitches will not be required.

STRATEGY PROGRESS REPORT

It was decided in August by members of the Donaghmore / Ashbourne Executive Committee that a review should be undertaken at the end of the first year of operation,of the revised structure in the Club.
This Review involved the issuing of questionnaires and interviews with almost all the major Committees/Subcommittees and its conclusions were as follows:
Major Findings:
Overall response was extremely positive and all recognized that the implementation of a radical new structure will take time to implement.
There were a number of issues identified, as follows:
* Some delays in implementation of elements of the Report (Strategy Committee, Marketing Committee, HR Committee annd Player Welfare Officer not yet established ).
* Lack of Communication- in particular internally - and it was stressed that there were problems in regard to communication upwards and downwards
* Evidence of lack of understanding of roles on the part of some individuals and Committees
* Need for the Executive to take ownership of the new system.
* Need for a member of the Executive to be given responsibility for the implementation of the new structures on behalf of the Executive.
* Need to avoid overloading of certain people to ensure that the key responsibilities of Office holders are performed adequately.

Recommendations of SRC
1. Set up all Committees/ Subcommittees and activate them.
2. Executive Committee to give more direction and feed-back to Committees at its regular meetings.
3. Give a definite defined role to every member of the Executive – eg.
(a)Appoint a member of the Executive to take responsibility for internal Communications.
(b)Appoint a member to oversee implementation of the new structures.

4. Conscious effort to be made to avoid overloading any Office holder – in particular the Chairpersons of key Committees.
5. Structured guidance to be organized for all Officers, Chairs of Committees and of Subcommittees.
6. Marketing Committee to be responsible to the Management Committee rather than the Finance Committee.
7. Members who are full-time employees shall not be eligible for membership of the Executive.

Membership: This report was prepared by the following members of the former Strategy Review Committee: Frank O’ Donnell; Brendan O’ Connor: John Harmon and Liam Mulvihill.

Historic Day for Donaghmore Ashbourne
Donaghmore Ashbourne registered an impressive triple success of wins as they closed out their underage season for 2010. For the first time in the club’s history (if not a unique situation in the GAA world) we had two teams in the Under 21 finals in Pairc Tailteann this afternoon. The C Championship final was contested between Meath Hill and Donaghmore Ashbourne’s second team and this was a thoroughly entertaining game with both sides showing excellent skill in an open and free flowing game. After a close first half Donaghmore Ashbourne ran out 4-11 to 3-05 winners to claim the club’s first Under 21 title.
In the main game of the afternoon Donaghmore Ashbourne’s first team met Simonstown Gaels. Unlike the opening game Donaghmore Ashbourne totally controlled the game and ran out 2-15 to 0-04 winners to claim the club’s second title.
Not to be outdone by the older Under 21 teams the club’s Under 13 reserve side met with O’Mahonys in the Under 13 Reserve final in Ashbourne later in the evening. In a game played in foggy conditions both sides gave a very entertaining display of skill and commitment. Like the first game of the day there was little between the teams at the interval but a solid second half performance gave Donaghmore Ashbourne a 0-14 to 1-02 winning margin.

Victorious U21 Captains! U13 Reserve Champions!

The U-21's now meet Simonstown in the final, who beat Navan O' Mahonys in the other semi-final.

Second U21 team also make the Championship Final

Not to be outdone our second Under 21 team saw off the challange of the competition favourites Bective to book a place in the C Championship final. Cathal Cullen's lads played very well to come out 2-11 to 1-10 winners and book a place in the  final against Meath Hill. The results this weekend means that all our juvenile football teams reached a  final this year.

Halloween Heartbreak in Navan
As Donaghmore Ashbourne supporters headed out of Pairc Tailteann this evening they couldn't but be reminded of Al Pacino's character Tony D'Amato's inspirational speech in the film Any Given Sunday where the game is all about inches. This could sum up the Division 1 league final today where our lads lost out to Summerhill by a single point on a final score line of 2-05 to 0-11. Overall our lads could not be faulted for commitment, effort and hard work but again with maybe a bit of lady luck or possibly experience or composure and it could have been a different result. We gave away a penalty in the 6th minute and recovered to look to go in at the interval ahead but a sloppy goal on 26 minutes gave the Hill a 2-01 to 0-06 half time lead. Even in the second half we had regained the lead by the 37th minute when we were rewarded a penalty. Unfortunately Andrew Tormey's effort was saved and Summerhill replied with 4 answered points. Two late points from our lads was not enough to force the game into extra time. It would be unfair to blame any one player for the result as everyone gave their all and although overall it was a very entertaining game it's  no consolation  for losing a league final and being crowned top league team in the county.
